In verse 22 we read, “Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea, and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days, they traveled in the desert without finding water.” Wait, what? What kind of playoff party is that? “Then” after the Red Sea, after the plagues; “then” after their song, their rejoicing, dancing, “then.” They go through this once in history event, and it’s followed up with a “then.”
As I read this, I can’t help but think of the Christian life. We live in bondage to consumerism, materialism, sexualism, egocentrism, and sin…ism. And we experience freedom in Christ. Our chains are broken off, and we see God different, the world different. As one author puts it, “we have been given a new song, a new life, a new beginning!” And a “then” shows up. We quickly discover that we must endure some wilderness experiences.
